Even narrowing the field down to my absolute favourite Montana shots, our ruthless designer was only able to accommodate some of them in this issue of FlyStream magazine. So here are a few that didn’t make it.
That magic hour at Buffalo Ford catching cutts on a Shaving Brush.
This is a grizzly we spotted just after we finished fishing at Buffalo Ford. It was about a mile downstream – seemingly a safe distance – until we noticed that it ambled another a mile or so in the 5 minutes we watched it.
This is Andrew’s big Lamar River cutthroat, the one he’s bending his rod into in the magazine story.
Madison River, Ruby Ck. I startled a mountain lion in the bankside scrub here (and it startled me!) The area is known to have high numbers of mountain lions and the fishing is pretty good too. Right by the outer edge of the weed bed in the foreground, I watched the biggest trout I saw all trip, a brown I’d guess at 8 pounds, quietly porpoise for a mayfly. I fished to it for the next half hour with what I thought was great care & restraint, but it never showed again.
Madison River, Barnes Pools. I wish I’d taken more pictures here (Chuck took this one with my camera) but the excitement of watching literally hundreds of fish rising flat out for mayfly was too much. All the patches of white water are slashy rises, or the aftermath.
Home sweet Home. The house by the East Gallatin River that was home for our trip, and our beloved twin cab V8 Silverado pickup that thundered along hundreds of miles of Montana roads without missing a beat.
