Everything you want to know about Vic’s wild trout…

Talk Wild Trout, Vic Fisheries’ open-to-the-public event all about our wild trout streams, is nearly here. Saturday week (5 November) the second Talk Wild Trout conference will be held at the Mansfield Performing Arts Centre. Admission is free and everyone is welcome, although to ensure seats are available and to manage catering etc., Fisheries ask that you register your attendance here. At last count, nearly 200 people have registered so it should be a great day.

Following on from the very successful event held same time same place last year, this year’s conference will see the experts update us on how our wild trout streams have been going, new information on trout behaviour, what’s being done to make our wild trout streams better, and what the plans are for the future.

The Nariel is back to good health, but how are some of our other important streams like the Kiewa and Mitta doing?

A lot of the Nariel is back to good health, but how are some of our other important streams like the Kiewa, Howqua and Mitta doing?

There’s too much to cover in one blog, but I’m particularly looking forward to Taylor Hunt’s report cards on the 12 Priority Rivers, Jason Lieschke’s update on water temperatures and tracked trout movement, and Dr John Morrongiello‘s presentation on practical steps we can take to improve trout fishing in the face of water temperature issues.

I see the Wild Trout Fishery Management Program as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to develop better stream trout fisheries in Victoria, and Talk Wild Trout is the place where we get to find out what’s working – and what isn’t. It’s also an opportunity to hear about what’s really going on beneath the water – something even the most canny and observant anglers can miss. See you there!
